If your flight is from, or to, a country within the European Union then you are protected under EU law. This means you are entitled to free assistance, re-routing or a refund of your ticket if your flight is cancelled. In some cases, you may also be entitled to compensation. Find out more in our compensation section.
If your flight is cancelled, the airline must offer you a choice between reasonable re-routing or a full refund. If you are waiting for your replacement flight at the airport, the airline must also offer you free care. This includes meals and refreshments, telephone calls, hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and the hotel. If you choose a refund, it should happen within seven days of the cancellation of your flight.
Bad weather conditions, such as storms; unofficial strikes; or natural disasters, such as volcanic eruptions or terrorism can all result in an airline being unable to run a flight. In these circumstances, you should still be offered a choice between reasonable re-routing or a full refund. You won’t be entitled to compensation, but you may still be entitled to free care.
We will assist you if you want to know more about your rights or if you have a problem with an EU business.
